There are so many myths about cats - like that they're not affectionate, that they don't love us, that they just basically use us to take good care of them. Those are myths about cats. My experience of them is so different.
I'm an accidental cat expert, starting from ... I love cats - cats and dogs together. In addition to 11 cats, I have 2 large dogs, and they all (mainly) get along.
I don't just love them. I study them. Jane Goodall has her chimps. Diane Fossey had her gorillas. Birute Galdikas has her ourangutans. I have cats that live in a cat society.
I have two warrior cats, several silly cats, timid cats, a couple of very funny cats, an extremely neurotic cat (someone less sensitive might call her a stupid cat), and even a social worker cat who calms the neurotic cat.
I even have a blind one-toothed hearing-impaired cat. She's one of the warrior cats. (Here's her story.)
I've learned how important family is to them, and social skills, courage, fear and love. I've learned how they can change - how killer cats can become gentle cats, how extremely timid cats can overcome some of their fear.
It's caring that motivated me to become a cat expert. I'm not a detached observer, sitting on the sidelines, taking notes.

One thing I've come to believe: it's great to live with many cats, and it's easy if you have a good kitty litter box. I say that as a cat expert as well as cat lover.
You may be wondering, how did I turn out this way - cat expert, cat person, cat nut?
How I Became a Cat Lover and Cat Expert
It's only in the past few years that I've become a true cat lover.
I liked the cat we had when I was a child. I liked the 3 cats I came to have when I moved out from home. I took good care of them.
But after that, there were years with no animals at all. And I was fine with that. No time.
What's changed? Love. Something has opened inside me - and this means having lots of cats is easy, a pleasure, done lovingly.
The love of animals started with a dog, actually - a large dog, a Doberman, one of the most loving creatures I have known, and one of the big loves of my life.
The love of animals grew with the cats - perhaps most with an especially loving one, Scruffers, one I almost gave away. Some might call him a silly cat. Most people call him a rubber band cat - he's so comfortably flexible.
What makes Scruffers so loving toward me? Is it that I saved his life when he was 4 days old? Is it just the way he is? I don't know. (Here's the story of this silly cat, a story that starts with his near death.)
11 cats - that didn't happen overnight. And it's something I would never have imagined. It all started innocently enough - 2 city people getting 2 kittens. The next step was also innocent enough - a starving cat showing up at our cottage one cold November night.
What happened next had to do with my longing to have a child - which didn't happen. At any other time I would have made sure the starving cat did not have a chance to have kittens. Now the opposite happened.
Now I've come to love watching my little cat society - how things change, how the personalities mix with each other, who gets along with whom.
I've become a cat expert, on everything from the best kitty litter boxes to how to integrate a new cat into a cat society.
I have lots of other areas of expertise - academic, professional. But being a cat expert has nothing to do with credentials. It's evolved from living with my cat family, watching and loving and learning.
