Fatal Flaw in Economic Theory
I've heard something over and over: we need growth!
economic growth! or we'll have a global economic meltdown!
And over and over I've known:
This is nuts!
We Need Growth -
sure, like we need a hole in the head!
like we need cancer!
I knew this what feels like centuries ago. I was studying Brave New World. The nutty premise: we need an anti-intellectual world, because thinkers consume too little. The way to keep a society like ours going is
GROWTH, GROWTH, GROWTH!
I was sure people would, en masse, realize the folly of the growth, growth, growth model. (I could not persuade the teacher, by the way. It was a literature class - he stuck with the vision in the book, which is also the common vision in our Western world.)
I put my idea aside. I didn't stop believing it - but I also had loads of other interests. And I had no idea of how to get heard.
Time has passed. I still keep hearing: we need GROWTH, GROWTH, GROWTH! And inside me, it still goes: this is utterly nuts.
Now, today, I am going to try to reach the world.
The big question: why goes the growth, growth, growth model make no sense? What is the inherent fatal flaw?
We're
born with
the capacity to think.
What we learn to do with it,
is what matters.
Other qualities also come in:
the capacity to communicate;
hope that others may hear.
My question to myself:
are my hopes of being able to reach,
and my capacity to communicate
big enough that I take on the challenge
of trying to convey my thinking
about economic alternatives?

The Idea Emporium on Economic Alternatives
Instead of panic at the thought of a global recession,
how about seeing economic downturn as an opportunity to do downturn management,
and in fact to come to more sustainable growth development - not growth dreams?
It isn't just a matter of how to survive recession, survive downturn, survive economic depression.
It's a matter of vision of how best to live to be able to get near our potential.
For that we desperately need economic alternatives - alternative economics.
I don't know what is panic and what is a realistic fear. I do know that less is often more.
I do know that more time for thinking, for learning, for closeness - these are good things.
So economic alternatives to the traditional economic models
would not put growth at the core -
but start with: what makes for the greatest development of our potential.
That is an important kind of growth - more important than more possessions.
