The Lure of Hating Back
and Hurting Back
My parents grew up in Nazi Austria. My
father was nine in 1939, when the Nazis came to power in Austria (part
invasion, but local support as well). After the war, he found out what
had happened to the Jews – including to the lone Jewish family
in his village. Death.
In 1955, 10 years after the end of the Holocaust, he emigrated to Canada. By then he had a
wife and two small daughters.
To show he wasn't anti-Semitic,
my father chose an apartment in the middle of an Orthodox Jewish community. As
you may well imagine, my sister and I were not welcomed with open arms.
My father could not hear that at all – it
was out of his range of understanding. According to him, people who have
been the victims of prejudice know all too well how much prejudice hurts,
and so could never do unto others what has been done to them. My sister
and I survived.
My unusual experience
has had a lifelong impact ...
What we learn to do with them,
is what matters.
Do we learn it is our right
to cut off from a group of people? -
especially if there's prejudice against
our group (women, Muslims, Jews,
Christians, blacks, gays and lesbians) -
and if massive injustices have been
committed to our group?
And what if we feel counter hostility,
but don't want to.
Is there anything we can do?

What happens when, as the saying goes, the shoe is on the other foot?
One huge thing is different: with discrimination there is no historic injustice committed by the oppressed group. So whites cannot point to massive injustices committed by blacks to whites.
But blacks can easily point to white injustices to blacks. The same holds for women, gays and lesbians - but not for all groups.
If one comes to Christians and Muslims, for example, there is a long history - with Muslims first conquering many Christian countries (as well as a large part of Hindu India) - and later Christians launching Crusades against Muslim lands - and more recently European takeover of much of North Africa (not for religious conquest) and now Muslim nationalism.
Reverse discrimination - it can become a tangled web.
