The narcissist: has a grandiose sense of self-importance, is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance.
The narcissistic personality: a major characteristic is the belief in being special, better, higher status.
Narcissistic disorders and malignant narcissism: much rage. Narcissistic behavior when thwarted: rage.

The Narcissist: who is that horror in the mirror?

On the rage of the self-proclaimed righteous
when coming
across mirrors.
Something felt very odd to me: Muslims rage, Muslim outrage, because of a cartoon in which their prophet had his turban turned into a bomb. Yet some Muslims were doing massive violence in the name of their prophet - and this did not lead to outbursts of rage.
The Muslim explanation: no one had the right to depict their prophet.
I had to agree with one part of the rage: their prophet had been depicted, and it seems quite accurately - perhaps not in terms of their religious texts (I have way too little knowledge of those) - but in terms of how many Muslims were using their prophet and their religion.
I didn't think of fancy words: narcissistic disorders, narcissistic behavior, malignant narcissism. I didn't think of defining the narcissistic, or the narcissistic personality.
I looked at the reality: rage, outrage, massive protests. An embassy burned.
I remember a friend telling me that she was sure my camera was broken when I showed her a picture of herself. I'd passed her the picture because I saw it as flattering. She was stunned - she had no idea she looked that heavy.
My thought: maybe Muslims were outraged at the Danish cartoon (and later at a speech by the pope) - while not outraged by Muslim violence - because they had just had an unflattering glimpse of themselves in a mirror.

Do we learn it is our right to rage?
Is rage validated by our culture?
Do we learn that others deserve
whatever we're shelling out?
Do we learn we're better than others -
and therefore can rage against them,
demand that they follow our rules?
But that isn't the question here.
The question:
what happens when someone
convinced of their righteousness
gets an unflattering glimpse
of themselves in a mirror?

The Idea Emporium on Narcissistic Disorders
I'm not a big one for labels - but how else to let others know what I was looking at?
Horror of mirrors? The image that comes to mind is the woman on a diet. Not my concern.
My concern: outrage at a glimpse that, to me anyway, looked like an accurate reflection.
And with that, doing a bit of searching on the web, I came to narcissism.
Narcissistic disorders, and with that malignant narcissism: grandiosity and rage.
It's not just Islam that claims to be the best, the one and only. It's a claim found in many religions.
But what does it do, to inculcate into people, we're the best, we're right, we're the only ones on the one and only right path? And of course, what if (as is believed by many in those religions who preach this), one of them should actually be right?! Then of course it would not be narcissism. But then, it would be impossible to come upon an unflattering view of oneself and one's religion.
That brings me to other questions, like on the ultimate reality. This isn't the time or place.
For now: seeing oneself and something one values in an light one finds repugnant.
What if that is closer to reality than our image?
Where do narcissistic disorders start, what is malignant narcissism -
and what is just upsetness at an unpleasant shock?
