Vaccines and Autism. Are Parents Responsible? OCTOBER 7, 2007 First title: My partner, Philippe, found the first title confusing. Was I concerned with vaccines and the possible link to the increase in autism? As for chains in the mind, that didn't really register when he read the title. What was I concerned about? And how could I say it in a way that would attract attention? My concern: how chains in the mind have kept loving parents from acting to protect their children, despite the fact that there keep being links indicated between the skyrocketing rate of childhood vaccines and the skyrocketing rate of autism. Now, how to say that in a way to attract attention. It was Philippe who suggested: Quite controversial, I would say. I softened the title, to make it more accurate. First, I turned the statement into a question. Then, parents clearly have no responsibility for the initial increase in autism rates. But loving parents do have the responsiblity, if there is a major danger, to protect their children as best they can - by getting all the informaton they can and by acting upon it. I was a child in Montreal during the last polio epidemic - the first time there was a vaccine. Parents lined up for hours so their children could be vaccinated. Yet despite the repeated suggestions of links between autism and childhood vaccines, most parents are not reacting. That brings me to my title: Parents Responsible for Ongoing Autism Increase? As for chains in the mind, that is explained early in the article. What mental chains are stopping parents from reacting? Right now, just before the article is going on the web - and out in an update - I'm a bit hesitant about the title. On the other hand, I want people to read the article, and a catchy title is likely to make that happen. I will see. **** For those of you who might be interested in the evolution of the piece, beyond the evolution in the title, here are links to the first draft, a second draft - and the final version: First draft: Childhood Vaccines, Autism Increase and Chains in the Mind Second version: Childhood Vaccines, Autism Increase and Chains in the Mind Final version: Parents Responsible for Ongoing Autism Increase? **** APRIL 14, 2008 - THERE ARE NO LINKS - NO ACCIDENT This ended up being a topic where I got a lot of responses - both pleased and angry. I realized I would have to do more research - and I ended up, until now, having moved on to other topics that were swallowing all my time. Research: I assumed that the comments made, re the link between autism and vaccines were based on pretty strong evidence. It seems - but again I'm not sure - they were not. Then there is a lot coming out on genetic factors. The counter-argument: of course there are such factors, but they only explain a small percentage of autism cases. So before putting all my variations and thoughts on the web, I will do more research. I hope I will again come to time, enough time. In the meantime, I am leaving some stuff off the web - but I am leaving a record.
